• Transfer Admissions Criteria

  Below are the top factors that SUNY Plattsburgh considers in a transfer applicant, in relative order of importance.

  • Cumulative Grade Point Average — SUNY Plattsburgh recommends a 2.30 cumulative GPA for admission to most programs. The nursing RN-to-B.S. and social work programs require a minimum 2.5 GPA and all education programs require a minimum 3.0 GPA. GPA is calculated across all colleges or universities attended.

  • Coursework Completed — Students who are taking competitive, challenging academic programs will be viewed with preference for admission. Courses related to the student’s intended program of study will also be reviewed closely.

  • Academic Trend — Students who have shown an upward GPA trend on a semester-by-semester basis will be viewed favorably for admission.

  • High School Record — Transfer students who have less than 24 college credits completed at the time of application will be reviewed on the basis of both their high school record and transfer record. They will be asked to submit their high school transcript, a letter of recommendation and supplemental materials for the application review process.   • Letter of Recommendation and Essay (recommended) — All transfer applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a recommendation letter and an essay.

Steps to Apply

• Step 1: Visit Campus

  We encourage you to come to campus and see exactly what SUNY Plattsburgh has to offer. Tours and group presentations are available year-round. You can also schedule an individual appointment with a transfer advisor throughout the week.

• Step 2: Apply For Admission

  Transfers have two options to apply online — The SUNY Application or the Common Application. Both applications are viewed equally by the admissions committee. Please be sure to complete only one of the two applications.

  Transfers are encouraged to submit their applications for the fall semester by March 1 and spring semester applicants by November 1.

  Students who apply will need to do the following:

  • Complete the Common Application or the SUNY Application
  • Pay the $50 application fee
  • Send an official college transcript(s). Note — unofficial college transcripts can be sent for conditional admissions review.
  • Send an official high school transcript and/or TASC, GED, or HSED test results (if applying with under 24 credits completed at time of application)

Steps After You Have Applied

• Step 3: Check Your Application Status

  Once you have applied for admission to SUNY Plattsburgh, you can check the status of your application online in your admissions portal.

  An email with your admissions portal login information is sent to the email address you provided 1–2 weeks after you submit your application.

• Step 4: Apply for Financial Aid

  We encourage applicants to complete the FAFSA — Free Application for Federal Student Aid — and the TAP Application (for New York state residents) by December 1 to qualify for all available aid resources.

• Step 5: Receive Notice of the Application Decision
  • Fall Admission: Acceptance packets are mailed beginning in November and continue on a rolling basis until admission closes (usually in mid-summer).
  • Spring Admission: Acceptance packets are mailed beginning in October and continue on a rolling basis until admission closes in January.

You’re Accepted, Now What?

• Step 6: Receive Preliminary Credit Evaluation

  The preliminary credit evaluation provides an approximate number of credits that will be accepted, your level of entry to the institution and any specific sequencing involved with completing your major.

  Preliminary credit evaluations are available in your admissions portal approximately two weeks after you receive your acceptance packet.

• Step 7: Pay your Deposit

  If you are accepted and decide to enroll at SUNY Plattsburgh, you’ll need to pay a $250 deposit to hold your spot in the transfer class. Your deposit must be paid by:

  • May 1 (for fall)
  • December 1 (for spring), or
  • Within 30 days after your acceptance if you are accepted after those dates (or by the deadline date indicated in your acceptance letter).

  Once we have received your deposit, we will send you important information on housing, orientation and registration.

• Step 8: Review Your Credit Evaluation (Degree Works Audit)

  The admissions office will complete an official credit evaluation once your deposit is paid. Your credit evaluation, called the Degree Works (DW) Audit, shows how all of your prior course work is placed in your new degree track at SUNY Plattsburgh, and what additional coursework is needed for graduation.

  For the fall, Degree Works Audits are generally started by early February. For the spring, Degree Works Audits are generally started by late October. You can see your Degree Works Audit by logging into your admissions portal.

• Step 9: Receive Advisement and Register for Classes

• Step 10: Send Final Transcripts

  If you receive a credit evaluation with IP (In Progress) grades listed, it means that we need an official transcript to complete your application for enrollment and officially award your college credit. If you receive your evaluation and no IP grades are listed, your evaluation is complete.

  Once we have received all official transcripts, we will notify you that an updated Degree Works Audit is available in your admissions portal, which will complete your application for enrollment at SUNY Plattsburgh.
