Our B.S. in accounting requires a concentrated academic effort on your part as a student, but the rewards are many. The program includes accounting, economics, finance and management coursework. These not only give you a strong foundation in accounting, but also ensure that you can integrate your accounting knowledge into the world of business and economics.
What Will I Learn?
In addition to a strong foundation in accounting, our program contains a strong writing and career development component. As the nature of business has changed, the need to communicate effectively has increased. Our program has in place a special course in professionalism to help ensure that you will have the skills necessary to achieve your career goals.
We have a large number of internships and co-ops available for our students. Many of the internships are on campus or within the local business community. We also have opportunities with international companies like IBM. The School of Business and Economics also has its own director of career opportunities and internships available to assist our students. In recent years, any student who has wanted an internship and has met the requirements has been able to get one.
Our program helps you prepare for the certified public accountant (CPA) examination. You can also pursue other professional certifications (such as CMA, CIA, CFE, to name a few) or continue on to graduate school.
What is Unique About Our Program?
Our Internship Program Placement Has No Match
There are plenty of opportunities for experiential learning with well-known corporations such as IBM and national, regional and local CPA firms such as Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG, GT, Bonadia, Abbott, Frenyea & Russell and more. You may decide to intern in a nonprofit organization, national, state or local government agency. We are continuously cultivating additional internships and co-op opportunities for our accounting majors at SUNY Plattsburgh. It is our way of enhancing your leadership development, team building skills and appropriate experiential learning.
Work One-on-One with Our Accounting Faculty
The accounting faculty are dedicated to provide you with a curriculum that empowers you with the most advanced technical and analytical skills such as Excel, VBA, Spreadsheet Automation, SQL and more. This will distinguish you from others and make you more marketable in the accounting and financial markets.
The program’s added emphasis on obtaining soft-skills such as writing, communication, professionalism, leadership along with the emphasis placed on gaining a broad-based and diverse business acumen is exactly what's needed in today’s global economy.
