Peer Counseling
Peer counseling offers a supportive space where students can talk through challenges with trained peers who understand college life. Peer counselors listen, show empathy and share guidance based on their own experiences. While peer counseling is not professional therapy, it can be a helpful addition to other mental health and wellness resources on campus.
What is Peer Counseling?
Peer counselors at SUNY Plattsburgh are trained undergraduate students who provide in-person, on-campus support through the Student Health and Counseling Center. Peer counseling is a form of support in which trained students provide listening, encouragement and practical guidance to other students facing similar concerns.
Key aspects of peer counseling include:
- Shared Experience — Peer counselors draw on their understanding of student life to create a welcoming, nonjudgmental environment
- Trained Support — Peer counselors complete specialized training in active listening, communication, and support strategies. They do not diagnose or provide clinical treatment
- Focus on Empowerment — Conversations center on building self-care skills, fostering resilience and supporting personal growth
- Connection to Resources — Peer counselors can help students identify and access appropriate campus resources
- Distinct from Therapy — Peer counseling emphasizes support and community, while professional counseling focuses on clinical assessment and treatment
Peer counselors are not professional counselors, but they play an important role in supporting student well-being and success.
