Cross Registration & Off-Campus Study: Guidelines & Instructions
Matriculated students at SUNY Plattsburgh must obtain campus approval prior to taking courses hosted at another institution in order to evaluate transferability and applicability to degree requirements.
SUNY Plattsburgh tuition and financial aid may be applied to courses that are essential for on-time graduation and are taken at another SUNY institution through cross registration.
Alternatively, students may choose to take courses at other institutions that are not essential for on-time graduation. Students are responsible to pay the other institution directly for all applicable tuition and fees for this type of off-campus study.
- Main Campus Students
If you are considering taking a course at another campus, consult with your advisor to discuss how the course fits into your academic plan. Refer to the information below to identify if the course you wish to take off-campus is eligible for cross registration. For assistance with this process, please contact the registrar’s office at [email protected].
Cross Registration
Cross registration may be available for students in good academic standing if the course you want to take at another SUNY institution is:
- Applicable to your degree; and,
- Essential for allowing you to graduate on-time.
Cross registration applies the tuition or financial aid from SUNY Plattsburgh to the course at the other SUNY campus.
To apply for cross registration, complete the Cross-Registration and Off-Campus Study Approval Form [Fillable]. After receipt of this form, the registrar’s office will email you at your plattsburgh.edu account to notify you whether the course is eligible for cross-registration. The email will include further instructions to fill out the SUNY online application that is required in those cases.
Off-Campus Study
Courses that do not meet the criteria for cross registration may be taken at another institution, however you are responsible to pay that institution directly for all applicable tuition and fees. Speak to your advisor and/or department chairperson to ensure you choose a course that best fits your goals and academic plan.
- If the course you would like to take appears on the Transfer Credit Equivalencies Table as the Plattsburgh equivalent you expect, you may take the course without prior approval.
- If the course you would like to take does not appear on the Transfer Credit Equivalencies Table or it appears but has a different course in the “PSU Course” column than you prefer it to transfer in as, or it has no course listed in the “PSU Course” column, you must complete the Cross-Registration and Off-Campus Study Approval Form [Fillable] and attach a course description for each course. Plattsburgh reserves the right to deny the transfer of credits/courses that have not been pre-approved and are not on the Transfer Credit Equivalencies Table.
Important Information for All Students

- You will not receive duplicate credit if the course is a repeat of courses completed at Plattsburgh or previously transferred from another institution.
- You must earn 30 of your last 36 credits required for your degree at Plattsburgh to meet the senior residency requirement (RN-to-B.S. nursing majors, students in a SUNY-approved study abroad program, and students required to complete their final coursework off-campus are exempt from this requirement).
- Undergraduate students are allowed a maximum of 67 credits to transfer from a two-year college and a maximum of 84 credits to transfer from a four-year college.
