Theatre Department

When you join our department as a theatre major, you partner with a rich tradition of theatre students and professors who have been working as artist/scholars in the field of theatre.

Working within the framework of theatre as a liberal art, our students focus on performance, theatrical design/technology, theatre history, dramatic literature and theory — and combine these skills within our generalist B.A. major. Working with faculty who are both scholars and professional directors and designers, our students have gone onto work in the professional theatre, professional graduate training programs in theatre, teaching, and into many different communications-related fields.

Theatre majors have an opportunity to enter their work and attend the Region 1 Kennedy Center/American College Theatre Festival, in areas from acting, playwriting, design, stage management, and dramaturgy, just to name a few.

Our department also provides many opportunities for all students to perform, design, and write about theatre in addition to working on the full theatrical productions in our academic season and to participate in student organization projects. So come join us as a theatre major or minor, or come work on one of our productions, and be a part of the SUNY Plattsburgh theatre tradition!

Auditions

Open auditions for departmental productions are held twice each fall semester for the main stage productions. You do not have to be a theatre major or minor to participate, however you need to be a student at SUNY Plattsburgh.

We also have technical theatre positions for the production of each show. Whether it be building the set, running lights, make-up or costume construction, you can participate in many ways. Contact Ben Wright or Marie Barber for more information.

Prospective students: You do not have to audition to be a major or minor in the theatre program. Apply to SUNY Plattsburgh and once you are accepted to the college you can declare the theatre major/minor. Contact Kim Hartshorn (518-564-2478) for any questions or to make an appointment to tour the department.

When are auditions?

Auditions are usually held during the first week of the Fall semester and the second week of November. Be sure to check your daily digest and look for signage around Myers for current audition announcements. Check out our Facebook page for more up-to-the-minute announcements.

What happens at an audition?

Auditions are the process for a director to find the cast members for a production. Often our auditions are “open,” meaning that everyone shows up at a given time and everyone participates in “cold readings.” Sometimes our auditions are “closed” meaning that you sign up for a specific time and present a prepared monologue or song. Each audition is different, so make sure to check the announcement for details!

No matter what, you should always show up in comfortable, neat clothing that you can move in. Keep your hair out of your face and remove any hats. Please refrain from bringing food or drinks (besides bottled water). Please know your current and future schedule or bring a copy! If you have any questions or concerns about the audition process you should contact the director.

No audition is required for admission to the theatre major. The major is open to all students.
