Dr. Nathaniel Schutten


Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice

Dr. Nathaniel Schutten is an assistant professor in the Department of Criminal Justice. He completed his Ph.D. in criminal justice at SUNY Albany in 2026 and joined the faculty at SUNY Plattsburgh in 2024. His research interests include gun ownership, gun attitudes, public opinion, correctional reform and behavioral economics. His work has appeared in Criminology, Justice Quarterly, Crime & Delinquency, and Criminology & Public Policy

Dr. Schutten is the Chapter Advisor for SUNY Plattsburgh’s Nu Eta chapter of the Alpha Phi Sigma Criminal Justice Honor Society. He is also a member of the Rockefeller Institute of Government’s Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium, as well as the American Society of Criminology Division of Public Opinion and Policy. Recently, he presented his research at the Annual American Society of Criminology in San Francisco.

In his free time, Dr. Schutten enjoys traveling with his wife, spending time outdoors with his dog Winston, playing golf and reading.
