  • 4.0 Policy

The provost and vice president for academic affairs and deans are responsible for determining the course offerings for the summer and winter sessions and selecting faculty for appointment.

Course offerings will be determined primarily based on student demand. Faculty selection shall take into account the following qualifications:

    • Quality of classroom teaching.
    • Teaching experience relevant to the specific courses to be taught.
    • Formal preparation for college teaching, including advanced degrees.
    • Ability to perform academic responsibilities beyond classroom teaching.

A limited number of adjuncts may be appointed, as needed, each summer and winter with the following considerations being made:

    • The number of external staff members appointed shall be held to a minimum in order that a maximum number of regular staff members may be given the opportunity for summer and winter assignments.
    • Visiting staff members shall be selected on the basis of their ability to broaden the instructional program which our graduate students had during their four years of undergraduate study.
    • When possible, adjuncts should have recognized expertise that enhances the academic program.
    • Whenever possible, reciprocal exchanges with other institutions should be encouraged.
    • Recruitment for visiting staff members must comply with affirmative action guidelines.

Undergraduate courses enrolling fewer than six students may be cancelled unless permission is granted for extenuating circumstances. Faculty teaching undergraduate courses shall be compensated in accordance with the current Summer and Winter Session Salary Schedule. If enrollment falls below six students by the conclusion of the add/drop period, instructors shall be compensated at the rate applicable to six students. Faculty will not receive compensation for undergraduate courses with no enrolled students or for courses cancelled because of insufficient enrollment.

Graduate courses have no minimum enrollment requirement. Faculty teaching graduate courses shall be compensated in accordance with the current Summer and Winter Session Salary Schedule based on official enrollment at the conclusion of the add/drop period.
