Chicoutimi is the fourth largest city in Québec. It is located approximately two hours north of Québec City by car, or six hours northeast of Plattsburgh by car. The region is known for its rugged beauty and wilderness. The nearby Lake St. Jean and Saguenay fjords, especially, attract thousands of tourists annually. Our students have always found Chicoutimi and its people to be warm, friendly and eager to share their language and culture with them.
Chicoutimi has one of the highest concentrations of native French-speakers in North America, making it the most ideal setting for those of you are serious about being immersed in the French language to become fluent. The Language and Québec Culture School at the University of Québec at Chicoutimi has a long relationship with SUNY Plattsburgh, and several other institutions in the US. For more information regarding things to do and see in Chicoutimi and Saquenay, please visit: Saguenay Tourism and Trip Advisor
To learn more about a day in the life at UQAC, please watch this video.
The 5-week summer program at Chicoutimi is worth 6 undergraduate credits in French language courses, and the 3-week program is worth 3 credits. Prior your arrival, you will take an online placement exam that is meant to place you with others who have a similar French proficiency as you. For a list of course descriptions, please visit Chicoutimi’s website for the 3-week program or 5-week program.
Estimated Program Dates:
- 3-week program: early-July to mid-July

Emphasis will be placed on oral communication, while taking the student’s individual language needs into account. The teaching staff at UQAC are highly trained in the areas of teaching the French language to non-native French speakers and each course is supplemented by teaching monitors who are able to provide extra-curricular supervision to assist students with their language and comprehension studies.
Aside from classroom instruction, UQAC also offers the following social and cultural activities for students to take advantage of during their stay at Chicoutimi:
- Improvisation

Students may also choose to stay in residence accommodations on campus, although a homestay is highly recommended.
