Non-SUNY Programs
Study Abroad through Other Programs
- Eligibility Requirements
- Plattsburgh applicants only
- Program Information
The SUNY system offers students the opportunity to choose from hundreds of programs in a variety of locations. If you cannot find a SUNY program that fits your academic, professional, or personal goals, then students may consider a non-SUNY program. It is important that you consider all aspects of the program carefully. These include, but are not limited to academic offerings, application requirements, housing options, language of instruction, support before and during the program, as well as cost. SUNY Plattsburgh does not recommend or advise on the details of non-SUNY programs.
It is the responsibility of the student to ensure that the program issues academic credit from an accredited institution. Students need to ensure an official transcript is sent to the Registrar’s Office upon completion of their program, along with a certified copy translated in English and all syllabi.
PLEASE NOTE: This process is lengthy and can impact future registration and your graduation date if you plan to graduate upon return. All credits earned on a non-SUNY program will count as transfer credit and grades will not count toward the GPA. Students should consult their academic advisor regarding the maximum number of credits they may transfer toward their degree and whether any courses must be taken at SUNY Plattsburgh. Also, the Global Issues General Education requirement is not automatically fulfilled for semester length non-SUNY programs.
All Plattsburgh students must complete the Study Away Course Approval Form before the end of the semester prior to the start of their program and indicate that you are participating in a non-SUNY program. Please carefully follow the instructions outlined on the form.
- Housing
Housing options vary by program. Please consult your program provider or host university for more information. Please note that all study abroad students need to notify the Campus Housing and Community Living Office at Plattsburgh upon acceptance into a program.
- Support Services
Any questions specific to the program should be answered by the program provider or host institution.
- Cost
The cost of a program varies greatly. Please consult the cost estimate for your program, which should be available from your program provider or host institution.
