This is a simple presentation that goes over the Learning Center’s services, including the on-site and online tutoring we offer, how to book and cancel appointments with tutors, using walk-in sessions and how to become a tutor.

This presentation takes about fifteen to twenty minutes, depending on student involvement.  

You can request that the person who gives this presentation is one of our LC ambassadors, a peer tutor who is trained to give these presentations, or Assistant Director Regan Levitte will facilitate.

The LC presenter will spend time discussing why students benefit from attending a writing tutoring session, and what to expect — the writing tutors are taught their craft according to writing center pedagogy principles, and so it isn’t just a simple “proofread.” They will also go over how to book and cancel appointments with tutors, gives information about our other services, using walk-in sessions, and how to become a tutor.

Take your students to the Learning Center! You can select this as an option, and your students will get a Learning Center overview presentation from either our viewboard or the classroom inside the Learning Center if available. 

Teaching in the Learning Center for a single class session is possible, but requires booking FL103F via EMS. 

This workshop can work in either a 45-minute session for a 50-minute class, or a 60-minute session for a 75-minute class. 

In the workshop, students will learn about time-awareness, including how to plan their day, week, and/or semester. We will focus on budgeting their time efficiently, and making priorities to balance school and life. This workshop includes a variety of activities to instill these goals and concludes with an overview of the Learning Center’s on-site services with clear instructions regarding scheduling and cancelling tutor appointments. 

These are most often facilitated by Assistant Director Regan Levitte, sometimes with the assistance of an LC ambassador. 

This presentation goes over some unspoken truths about going to college, prioritization skills and basic time management techniques. It wraps up with a general overview of all the Learning Center’s on-site and online services, how to book and cancel appointments with tutors, using walk-ins and how to become a tutor.

Assistant Director Regan Levitte always facilitates this presentation. 

This workshop gives students the opportunity to discuss what they already know about taking notes from their pre-university experiences, goes over basic strategies for listening to lectures and taking effective notes and then gives a brief lesson on three different note-taking techniques. Students are then allotted time to try out different techniques and compare and contrast them. 

This workshop takes about 45 minutes, depending on student involvement. 

Assistant Director Regan Levitte always facilitates this presentation. 

In this hour-long workshop, Assistant Director Regan Levitte instructs best practices for peer review, equipping students with language to make delivering feedback easier and more comfortable and modeling effective peer review. 

This workshop does require a student to volunteer a draft of the assignment you want students to review for each other and be comfortable with reading that draft aloud to the group. 

In this hour-long workshop, synthesis of information strategies are shared with students using the medium of TV shows as a common set of texts to analyze and then students are set to do a small group activity to practice their synthesis skills. 

Credit should be attributed to Dr. Nicole Green, Dr. John McMahon and Dr. Amy Mountcastle, in addition to the Learning Center.

In this workshop, students are given several independent activities to help facilitate revising their own writing, including writing points from memory, organization of information and then follows up with a brief overview of the writing tutoring services available to students as another tool for revision. 

Credit should be attributed to Dr. W.M. Gordon in addition to the Learning Center.

We hire upward of 40+ peer tutors in an academic year, and do have some select professional tutors. Our services are always free for students — they can book appointments with peer tutors by using Cardinal Star, or we have walk-in sessions for certain high-demand courses. We also are members of the online consortium STAR-NY, which offers online tutoring in the evenings five days of the week. 

Why peer-based tutoring?  There’s nearly fifty years worth of scholarship on why peer-based learning is most effective for students (Slavin, 1980; Beasley, 1997; Boudouris, 2005; Lewis, 2011; Peck, 2015; Cuseo, 2015, Alexander et. al, 2022), because it gives students the relatability of a peer, which can be more comfortable for them and capitalize of age-related communication styles; shows students a positive peer role model; a chance for more immediate feedback and one-to-one learning; strengthens their social interactions and bonds; and is more flexible as far as scheduling — our peer tutors often tutor until 9 p.m.!

We do find that having someone from the Learning Center visit your course has some correlation to getting them to the Learning Center for academic support.

Otherwise, please fill out our Class Visit Request Form for each section of a course you’d like us to visit (for instance, if you're teaching two sections of MAT101, one at 10 a.m., and one at 11 a.m., please fill out the form twice), including a back-up date. We ask for a week’s notice, and please note that visits are first come, first serve. A staff member will reach out to you to confirm your visit once it is received and scheduled.

For content-based tutoring, simply complete this Faculty Recommendation Form. 

For writing tutoring, please email Assistant Director and Writing Specialist Regan Levitte at [email protected] with the student’s name. To tutor for writing, students must pass ENG101 with at least a B+, and then enroll in and pass ENG390: Writing Tutoring Theory and Practice. Regan does specialized outreach before advising time to those students who were recommended to tutor for writing.

Of course! Staff, faculty, and their TAs are more than welcome to use our space to hold review sessions, meetings and more!

If you want to meet with your class in the Learning Center for a session, please note that you would have to reserve either FL103F or FL105 on EMS.

Students can see if there are tutors in their courses by going to Cardinal Star, selecting the content tutoring tile on their Success Networks, and using the dropdown menu to see if there’s a tutor. Because we hire and train throughout the semester, the list of courses we tutor for is quite dynamic.

We strongly endorse extra credit — you can either provide your students with your own method of tracking this (a sheet for the tutor to sign is a good option), or we’re happy to keep track for you if you provide your course information and a timeline to track.
