PREPARE TO BE AN ENGLISH TEACHER

English Language Arts Major

Learn how to teach high school and love it!

What Will I Learn?

The B.A. English language arts provides a sound foundation for teaching literature in its rich diversity at the high school level. Our curriculum provides all the New York state subject area requirements for English 7–12 certification. After completing an M.S.T. program (in as few as three additional semesters), you will be eligible for initial certification — and, after three years of teaching experience, professional certification.

What is Unique About Our Program?

Because the ELA major allows 30 to 40 credits of elective work, you are free to select a second major, a minor, or the Professional Writing Certificate. That so many of our students become great teachers speaks for itself.

What are My Career Opportunities?

The English language arts major retains the versatility of any English major, so if you decide that teaching is not your best path, other options for ELA majors include jobs in health services, public relations, law, nonprofits, marketing, library science, communications, editing, publishing, advertising, and other fields requiring writing, reading, and thinking skills.
