PREPARE TO COACH IN A SCHOOL SETTING

Learn about wellness and fitness, the science of exercise, coaching psychology, designing exercise programs and meet the coaching requirements of the New York State Education Department.

Athletic Coaching Minor

To coach in a high school setting, the New York State Education Department requires you to have completed the following courses: philosophy, principles and organization of athletics in education; care, prevention of athletic injuries, and a coaching course. In addition, all coaches are required to be certified in CPR and first aid.

What Will I Learn?

PED420,  PED335 and our coaching courses are approved to meet the requirements of New York State Education Department for coaches.

The athletic coaching minor builds upon these courses to prepare you to coach in a school setting by providing additional knowledge in the areas of wellness and fitness, the science of exercise, coaching psychology and designing exercise programs. This minor is an excellent addition for students majoring in education or students majoring in other fields who would like to work with youth sports beyond their professional field.

New York state requires all applicants for teaching, coaching, counseling and administrative certification (provisional and permanent) to have taken a certified course in child abuse recognition and reporting. HED310 meets this requirement. Champlain Valley Educational Services in Plattsburgh also holds child abuse recognition and reporting workshops for a minimal fee.

What Are My Career Opportunities?

This minor prepares you for work as a coach in an elementary, middle or high school as well as other youth sports organizations.
