Ana Thiel to Present at Visual Artist Series

PLATTSBURGH, NY __ Glass sculptor Ana Thiel will give a presentation on Wednesday, Nov. 10 at 7:30 p.m. in the Cardinal Lounge in the Angell College Center at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh.  This event, which is part of this year's Visual Artist Series sponsored by the Campus Arts Council and the Student Association, is free and open to the public.

Thiel creates sculptures by combining hot cast glass with discarded and found objects. She scavenges the regions in which she works for furniture, machine parts, metal, weathered wood, books, and other materials. These items, combined with molten glass, allow her pieces to both capture history and create new life.

Her work has been widely exhibited in Europe, Japan and Mexico. Her pieces have also been featured in several books and catalogs including Contemporary Outdoor Sculptures by Brooke Barrie (1999) and Contemporary Glass by Suzanne K. Frantz (1989).

Thiel was born in Mexico City, Mexico in 1958. She graduated magna cum laude in industrial design from Iberoamericana University in Mexico in 1981. She also studied at Pilchuck Glass School in 1980 and the Barbini and Signoretto Factories in Italy in 1985. Thiel has taught at a number of universities and art centers including the Aichi University of Education in Japan and the University of Costa Rica.
