Middle States Re-Accreditation

The Middle States Commission on Higher Education reaffirmed the accreditation of SUNY Plattsburgh in June 2022. The action followed a years-long self-study process that is a critical component of this important designation and a peer-review team virtual visit in April 2022.

The next evaluation visit is scheduled for the 2029–2030 academic year.

The Middle States commission is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education to conduct peer evaluation and accreditation of public and private universities.

Accreditation is important because it enables the institution and its students to remain eligible to receive federal support and grants. It also affirms SUNY Plattsburgh's quality and commitment to improvement. Middle States serves to assure students and the public of educational quality and to ensure institutional accountability, self-appraisal, improvement, and innovation through peer review and the rigorous application of standards within the context of institutional mission.

The regular review process prescribed by Middle States provides campuses an opportunity for self-assessment, to reflect on its values, mission and vision, and review a range of other areas in an inclusive and substantive manner.

To maintain accreditation from Middle States, an institution must demonstrate it meets the Standards for Accreditation and Requirements of Affiliation. Compliance is expected to be continuous and is validated periodically.

A major component of our accreditation review was a self-study process, which began in 2020. This represented the views and perspectives from a breadth of stakeholders and reflected the varied perspectives of our diverse campus.

This web page is home to key aspects of this multi-year process and is updated periodically.
