Student Learning Opportunities

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at SUNY Plattsburgh offers a number of unique learning opportunities and facilities for students.

You will get hands-on experience in clinic and laboratory settings that will complement your academic learning. We integrate clinic and real-life learning activities into the classroom, to help you integrate academic knowledge into your clinical work.

Voice & Speech Science Laboratory

The voice and speech science laboratory is fully equipped with:

  • Stroboscopy equipment, used to visualize the larynx and measure vocal fold movement.
  • A CSL computer station for voice analysis and a nasometer to evaluate resonance. This equipment is especially useful for children with repaired cleft palates, who experience speech difficulties.
  • Five computer stations loaded with software to help you with your learning, including Praat and SALT.

Anatomy Lab

Our anatomy lab is unique in that we have brain and larynx specimens available to students within a number of our courses. In addition, we have an extensive collection of anatomical models that are available to students both within courses and for independent study.

Graduate Student Workspace

Our graduate students have access to a secure, large and sunny work space. Our grad room is shared across first- and second-year students, and includes a computer station, printer and resource room. Of course, there are refrigerator and microwave facilities — and we even have a couch so you can comfortably rest if you need to.

Audiology Suite

Our audiology suite is fully equipped with sound treated booth and audiometric equipment for comprehensive hearing evaluations and hearing aid services. We offer our graduate and undergraduate students exclusive opportunities to participate in direct patient care and simulated learning opportunities.

Our clinic rooms also have audiometers so that our students can screen hearing.
