Past Yearbooks Online | SUNY Plattsburgh
If terms like Roaring Twenties, Winter Weekend and Homecoming Weekend sound familiar, you may be a graduate or staff member of SUNY Plattsburgh.
For a look into these events, as well as many others, go no further than the closest Internet connection. A total of 87 SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinal Yearbooks, consisting of 16,046 images, have been a part of the New York Heritage website for more than a year. This project was made possible through the collaborative efforts of the college and the Northern New York Library Network based in Potsdam.
The yearbooks span from 1914 through 2002. No yearbook was published in 2001, and the 2002 issue only includes photos of the seniors.
“Having the SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinal Yearbooks available online is an invaluable resource for our campus and our alumni,” noted Debra Kimok, Special Collections librarian at Feinberg Library. “Yearbooks provide a unique and important glimpse into our college’s history – clues to events, ideas, and student life and culture not documented in any other college publication.
“Several campus offices regularly receive requests for information from the yearbooks. Now interested parties can search all of the yearbooks at once and easily find information about clubs, campus events, activities, concerts, family and friends and much more,” Kimok added.
Skimming through the pages of the Cardinal it is interesting to see the changes to nursing uniforms worn by students over the years, as well as the changes to styles and what was "in" for a given decade. A slew of well-known bands and groups performed on campus, including big names such as Fleetwood Mac, Jethro Tull, the Beach Boys and Alice Cooper.
The NewYorkHeritage.org site is available free of charge to the public. It currently contains the holdings from 19 northern New York institutions, and a total of 166 agencies from across the state have portions of their collections included.
