Music Department Presents Karen Becker and Friends Concert – “Five Years in the North Country: A Retrospective”
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Oct. 15, 2010) –The SUNY Plattsburgh Department of Music will
present a fifth anniversary Karen Becker and Friends concert Saturday, Nov. 6, 7:30
p.m. in E. Glenn Giltz, Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. Dr. Karen Becker, a pianist and an assistant professor of music, is calling her concert
“Five Years in the North Country: A Retrospective.”
“I initiated the Karen Becker and Friends series when I arrived in 2005. This year presents a wonderful opportunity to showcase old and new friends, many of whom have performed in my series in the past,” Becker said.
The Nov. 6 program will include the return of visiting guest artist Sonja Thompson (piano) of St. Paul, Minn., and a new guest from the Adirondack region, Brian Donat (cello). Also visiting will be SUNY Plattsburgh alumna AhYoung You, a 2009 music grad, who is now studying piano performance in graduate school. She will join current piano students Yana Groves and Manami Matsubara in the program.
Faculty members Robin Cameron-Phillips (flute) and Janine Scherline (clarinet) will be making a return appearance. Also featured on piano will be music faculty Jo Ellen Miano and Timothy Morningstar as well as former Dean of Education Dr. David Hill. In addition, the concert will include a special appearance by SUNY Plattsburgh President John Ettling who will also perform on piano.
“The audience is in for a treat. The program is diverse and fun and includes many piano pieces featuring two, four, five and eight hands,” Becker said.
Free and open to the public, Becker’s popular recital series "Karen Becker and Friends"
serves as a showcase for local and regional artists as well as for visiting guest
