Former Women's Studies Director to Speak, Aug. 19
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (Aug. 14, 2008) - Dr. Jennifer Scanlon, director of Gender and Women's Studies at Bowdoin College and former director of Women's Studies at SUNY Plattsburgh, will give a presentation titled "If My Husband Calls I'm Not Here: Beauty Parlors as Real and Representational Female Space" on Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m., in the Alumni Conference Room of the Angell College Center on campus.
Co-sponsored by the Department of Women's Studies and the Feinberg Library Readers series, this forum is free and open to the public. It will kick off a Women's Studies retreat.
The retreat will be held on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 19 and 20. It will allow faculty, associates and friends to reflect on and discuss continuity and change in the department over the next five years.
Wednesday's events will take place from 8:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Valcour Conference Center on Route 9, south of Plattsburgh. All are welcome to participate. The agenda includes presentations and discussion of draft proposals regarding the department's name, mission statement, bylaws and curriculum.
Dr. Simona Sharoni, the new chair of the Women's Studies Department said, "We are very excited and look forward to the retreat, which is the result of two years of research and consultations. We've come along way since 1976 when the first Introduction to Women's Studies course was taught on the SUNY Plattsburgh campus."
"Our vision and strategic proposals for the next five years are designed to further strengthen an already vibrant department and to increase its visibility, both nationally and internationally," Sharoni added.
The retreat is organized by the Women's Studies New Directions committee, an ad-hoc committee that was created two years ago.
