Education Faculty Member Honored for Work on Book

SUNY Plattsburgh’s Dr. Emily Daniels received an award for her work on a scholarly publication and has been formally honored two other times this year by campus organizations.

The American Educational Studies Conference Critics’ Choice Award recognized a book Daniels co-edited titled “Dangerous Counterstories in the Corporate Academy: Narrating for understanding, solidarity, resistance, and community in the Age of Neoliberalism.”

Daniels is an assistant professor of teacher education for the graduate Master of Science in teaching program.

The scholarly text, which includes personal narratives from professors, examines challenges academics face when professors bring ideas into their classrooms that aren’t necessarily endorsed by the general population.

Daniels accepted the award at the organization’s annual conference in San Antonio, Texas in November.

“It was so special,” she said of the accolade. “It was just so rewarding to be recognized.”

Honorary Sorority Member

Since 2013, Daniels has been an adviser to the Omega Phi Beta sorority chapter at SUNY Plattsburgh.

She provides advisement and guidance to the students in the Latina Greek organization as well as support at some of their events.

“It’s been a huge learning experience for me,” Daniels said of her work with the sorority.

Omega Phi Beta strives to spread awareness about violence against women.

Last spring, she was surprised when some of the members told her they wanted to nominate her for honorary membership.

She was inducted into Omega Phi Beta at the sorority’s annual convention in Chicago in June.

“People were so nice to me and so supportive and welcoming,” Daniels said.

The sorority generally inducts just one honorary member each year but this year, Daniels was one of two new honorary Omega Phi Beta sisters.

Cardinal Care Nomination

In November, Daniels was nominated as a Cardinal Care Honoree as part of the college’s Cardinals Care Recognition Program.

The program recognizes members of the college community who have made a positive difference or those who have gone out of their way to help others.
