Distinguished Visiting Alumni Program Welcomes Tourism Guru


PLATTSBURGH, NY __Joseph Haughney knows a thing or two about the resort business. A 1990 graduate of the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh, Haughney will return to his alma mater as a distinguished visiting alumnus. The highlight of his visit will be a presentation, "Resort Development in the International Arena" on Thursday, March 29, at 4 p.m. in the Hyman and Frances Krinovitz Recital Hall in Hawkins Hall. This event is free and open to the public. 

1990 SUNY Plattsburgh Alumnus Joseph Haughney Haughney is currently the senior project director of operations for Baha Mar Development Company Ltd., a subsidiary of Baha Mar Resorts, which owns and operates Cable Beach Resorts and Crystal Palace Casino in Nassau, Bahamas. Previously, he was the owner's representative for hotel development at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort where he was responsible for project development of two resort hotel properties. He managed all facets of project development including rooms, food and beverage, information technology systems and quality assurance.

"Joe exemplifies the career possibilities that are available to the hotel, restaurant and tourism management graduate," said Robert Rolfs, faculty member in hotel, restaurant and tourism management in the School of Business and Economics.  "His varied career demonstrates a fast track rise to his present position."

While on campus, Haughney will also meet with faculty and students and will make guest presentations in several classes.

Haughney received his undergraduate degree in hotel, restaurant and tourism management from SUNY Plattsburgh in 1990 and his M.B.A. from the Warrington College of Business at the University of Florida in 2001. He credits his undergraduate education at SUNY Plattsburgh with greatly enhancing his career path.

The Distinguished Visiting Alumni Program, sponsored by the Plattsburgh Alumni Association, brings alumni back to campus to discuss their careers with students, faculty, staff and community members. Alumni share new ideas and become more involved in the academic mission of the College.
