martine hebert canadian addressThe Center for the Study of Canada’s Distinguished Canadian Address, “A Conversation on Canada’s Future,” will be given by the Hon. Martine Hebert, senator in the Senate of Canada, Monday, Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. in Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall.

Hebert will discuss how Canada’s engagement in the world “is shifting amidst a quickly changing international order. A predictable rules-based approach to foreign policy and diplomacy, which prevailed since 1945, is being replaced by disorder, the fraying of alliances and trade disputes amongst nations. How will Canada navigate this uncertain environment?”

A renowned economist and former Quebec diplomat, Hebert served as a media economic analyst and lecture prior to her appointment to the Senate. She has contributed to the economic development of Quebec and Canada through her career in public and private organizations.

From 2019 to 2021, Hebert served as Quebec’s delegate in Chicago and as Quebec’s delegate general in New York from 2021 to 2024. She has also served as senior vice president, Quebec, and national French spokesperson for the Canadian Federation of Independent Business, where she worked for nearly 10 years.

Prior to that, Hebert ran her own public affairs firm and worked for the Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés du Québec.

Public Policies, Laws and Regulations

Throughout her professional life, she has collaborated on the development of public policies, laws and regulations in several major sectors of the Quebec and Canadian economy.

She has served on various boards and committees, including the Great Lakes Commission, as a member of the board for the Commission des normes, de l’équité, de la santé et de la sécurité du travail, as a member of Quebec’s Commission des partenaires du marché du travail, and co-chair of Quebec’s Comité-conseil sur l’allègement réglementaire et administratif, among other positions.

Hebert holds a bachelor’s and a master’s, both in economics from the Universite de Montreal. She has been recognized for her achievements, notably by the Universite de Montreal, which awarded her the title of honoured graduate in recognition of her outstanding career in 2010.

As a senator, Hebert has worked in the areas of economic development, public finance, international relations, the environment and energy. She also contributes to the advancement of issues that are important to her, such as diversity, equity and inclusion, gender equality, minority and LGBTQ+ rights, and women’s reproductive health, to name a few.

The address is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the Center for the Study of Canada at 518-564-2835 or email [email protected].
