Students, Alumni, Community Can Help Burghy Stop the Madness and Earn ‘Top Mascot’

SUNY Plattsburgh’s mascot is one game bird, ardently beloved by students, alumni and North Country community.

And it’s time for his fans to band together and elevate their No. One Cardinal, Burghy, as the State University of New York kicks off its annual Mascot Madness with public voting beginning with Round 1 at noon Tuesday, March 11.

Mascot Madness was introduced statewide more than a decade ago when SUNY New Paltz’s Hugo Hawk flew away with the honors in 2013. Over the years, Binghamton’s Baxter Bearcat, Stony Brook’s Wolfie and Geneseo’s Victor E. Knight have all taken the coveted prize, leaving Burghy picking up his pinfeathers once again. Don’t leave him hanging on the branch.

The bracketed competition pits SUNY’s 32 mascots against one another through five rounds, with each moving forward by garnering the most votes in each round. Give Burghy a wing up by voting Cardinal red. Each week, Strategic Marketing and Communications will provide reminders with direct links to participate.

The office will also provide digital and social updates throughout Mascot Madness. Be sure to follow SUNY Plattsburgh on Instagram and Facebook for updates.
