Well-published Profs: Giving the SUNY Plattsburgh Degree More Currency

Students are human capitalists, according to Colin Read, chair of SUNY Plattsburgh’s economics and finance program.

“They want to make the best investment in their human capital that they possibly can,” he said, and they want instructors who are active and respected in their field.

In fact, students are so serious about this that they have asked faculty in Read’s department to include their biographies on class syllabi.

“They want to know the professor is current and well published. It gives you more credibility,” Read said.

And when it comes to publishing, economics and finance faculty members are doing plenty. They have published more than 36 books in the past five years and — in the past three years alone— 40 papers and conference proceedings.

Maintaining the Value of a Plattsburgh Degree

Students benefit when teachers bring research into the classroom, said Dr. Greg N. Gregoriou, a professor of finance who has had more than 48 books and 60 scientific articles published. “It puts SUNY on the map,” he said.

Read thinks alumni benefit, too.

“It gives the Plattsburgh degree more currency,” he said.
