Alumni Profile: Nancy Kress (Class of 1969)


Award-Winning Sci-Fi Author

Plattsburgh State was excited to welcome Nancy Kress, a science fiction writer and 1969 graduate, who came back to campus this spring as the final speaker in this semester's Presidents' Speaker Series.

About Nancy Kress

Kress graduated from Plattsburgh State in 1969 with a degree in education. She taught until 1973 when she got married and started a family. While pregnant with her second child, Kress began to write science fiction stories. Her first story, "The Earth Dwellers," appeared in Galaxy in 1976. Her first novel, The Prince of Morning Bells, was published by Pocket Books in 1981.Since then, Kress has written 21 books, including 13 novels of science fiction or fantasy, one young adult novel, two thrillers, three story collections and two books on writing.Her most recent books are Crossfire (Tor, 2003) and Probability Space (Tor, 2002)."Probability Space" is the conclusion of a trilogy, beginning with"Probability Moon" and "Probability Sun, " that explores quantum physics, war, and the nature of reality."Crossfire", set in a different universe, explores various ways we might co-exist with aliens even though we never understand either them or ourselves very well.

A Nebula and Hugo Award Winning Writer

Kress's short fiction has appeared in all the usual places. She has won three Nebula Awards: Out of All Them Bright Stars (1985), Beggars In Spain (1991) - which also won a Hugo - and The Flowers of Aulit Prison (1998)The awards are administered, voted and presented by the Science Fiction Writers of America (SFWA) to acknowledge excellence in science fiction writing.Her work has been translated into Swedish, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish, Japanese, Croatian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Greek, Hebrew, and Russian.Kress is the monthly fiction columnist for Writer's Digest Magazine.
