Development Corp. Scholarship Helps Fund Student's French Connection

For French and Canadian studies major Tierney Braden, learning she was the 2012-2013 recipient of a Development Corporation Scholarship was nothing short of “fantastique.”

The junior from Lake Katrine, N.Y., said she is “very honored to be receiving this prestigious award. This scholarship is going to significantly help finance my studies at SUNY Plattsburgh.”

Braden hopes to enhance those studies and complement her dual majors while in France this fall as part of the study-abroad program. A self-professed Francophile, Braden said she chose SUNY Plattsburgh because of its proximity to the French-speaking city of Montreal. Now, having her tuition covered for the year is “overwhelming and is taking away the uncertainty of how I was going to pay for study abroad this fall.”

The Development Corporation Scholarship is awarded through the Center for the Study of Canada to a full-time undergraduate in the Canadian or Quebec studies programs. Preference is given to students residing in northern New York. The award may be renewed provided the student remains in good academic standing.

Braden chose her dual major after taking an introduction to Canada course as part of a general education requirement. She was hooked.

“I enjoyed learning about Canadian culture, history and its geography,” she said.
