School of Business and Economics Gets Approval for Data Analytics Masters Program | Plattsburgh

A new master’s degree out of SUNY Plattsburgh’s School of Business and Economics will help open doors for grads in the widening field of data analytics.

Today’s data-driven world has created a high demand for individuals who can gather, analyze, interpret, share and apply this data in a meaningful way to help improve decision making, cut costs and identify new opportunities.

According to Dr. Rowena Ortiz-Walter, dean of the SBE, SUNY Plattsburgh’s master of science in data analytics can run the gamut of employment opportunities.

Data Analytics ‘All Around Us’

“Data analytics is all around us,” she said. “Every time you go on Facebook, or Google something and mention a product for instance, you see that product in the ads on your feed or your Google search. A data analyst is responsible for that.”

The U.S. Bureau of Statistics reported that more than 100,000 new management analyst jobs will be created over the next 10 years, and recent McKinsey white papers and Gartner reports say the that won’t address the shortage of analytics talent, according to Dr. Rohit Rampal, chair of management, information systems and analytics in the SBE.

10-Month Cohort

Rampal said that data analytics graduates can walk into jobs in market research, supply chain management, project management, data warehousing, database management, data/text mining, big data analytics, and consulting.

What makes the SUNY Plattsburgh master’s in data analytics unique is its 10-month, 30-hour cohort-based program, where students process through their courses with the same group of students from start to finish.

“It’s a highly integrated program, offered by an AACSB-accredited business school, designed to produce well-rounded professionals,” Rampal said. “Students solve real problems using data from industry and government partners, using current industry-standard tools. We are excited that the first cohort will start this summer.”
