Annual Auction to Benefit Alternative Breaks Program


PLATTSBURGH, NY __ The Center for Service Learning and Volunteerism at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh will host its annual Alternative Breaks Service Auction at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 27, in the Alumni Conference Room, Angell College Center.

The auction will benefit the Alternative Spring and Winter Break trips to different sites in the country to perform community service. In the past, students have gone to Jackson, Tenn., and Bridgeport, Conn., to build Habitat for Humanity homes for low-income families; Bridgeton, N.J., to work with at-risk pre-school and Head Start programs; Baltimore, Md., to volunteer at a soup kitchen; Pursglove, W. Va., to volunteer at a community center; Mount Rogers, Va., to do environmental conservation work such as trail clearing, building bridge areas and re-routing streams off of trails; and Greenfield, N.H., to work at a school with children with disabilities.

With the help of Steve Brodi of Bridge Street Auction Service, there will be many items for auction, including:

* Two (2) Roundtrip airline tickets to anywhere in the ComutAir circuit (operating as
Continental Connection Airline Service out of Plattsburgh)

*Hand made rocking chair and cutting board from Nicaragua

*Art from local artists
*Lawn and house cleanup services provided by Alternative Break trip participants and Greek organizations

*Sports cards and memorabilia

*Oil change at Monroe Muffler

*Gift certificates in various denominations to many local establishments such as Mainely Lobster & Seafood, General Trading Company, Butcher Block, Anthony's Restaurant, Dick's Sporting Goods, Pizza Hut, The College Store, Applebee's Restaurant, Price Chopper
