Upcoming Holiday Musical Events at SUNY Plattsburgh


PLATTSBURGH, NY __ The Music Department at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh will host several upcoming concerts, just in time for the holidays.

Chamber Concerts I and II

The musical ensembles at SUNY Plattsburgh will present two upcoming concerts.

Chamber Ensembles Concert I , featuring the Brass Ensemble, Clarinet Choir and Saxophone Ensemble, under the direction of music faculty members Herm Matlock, Janine Scherline and Daniel Gordon, will perform on Tuesday, Nov. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall.

Chamber Ensembles Concert II will be held the following evening, Wednesday, Nov. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. This concert features two chamber ensembles, Sinfonia, under the director of Elizabeth Gorevic, and the Flute Ensemble, directed by Robin Cameron-Philips.

Sinfonia is a string chamber orchestra and performers include Plattsburgh State students as well as members of the greater Plattsburgh community. The Flute Ensemble is comprised of students from SUNY Plattsburgh and area high schools.

Both concerts are free and open to the public.

Sinfonia to Perform at North Country Cultural Center for the Arts

SUNY Plattsburgh's Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble, under the director of Elizabeth Gorevic, will perform at the North Country Cultural Center for the Arts on Thursday, Nov. 30, at 7 p.m. The concert will feature music from the Baroque, Romantic and 20th century repertoire for string orchestra.

The 15-piece ensemble includes some of Plattsburgh's most accomplished string players, both from the College and throughout the North Country.

Tickets are $8 for general admission; $7 for seniors and students; $6 for NCCCA members; free for SUNY Plattsburgh students with proper ID.

Jazz Talent Comes Home Jazz Concert

Two of the finest jazz musicians to grow up in the North Country will return to the area as guest artists at the winter concert of the SUNY Plattsburgh Jazz Ensemble and Contemporary Combo.  The Music Department presents Jazz Talent Comes Home featuring saxophonist Keith Pray and Vibraphonist Tim Collins on Friday, Dec. 1, at 7:30 p.m. in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium of Hawkins Hall. This concert is free and open to the public.

The program will feature the Jazz Ensemble and the Contemporary Combo in a variety of big band and small jazz ensemble works.  Featured as guest soloists with the band will be two of the best jazz musicians to grow up in the North Country. 

Pray is a graduate of Ausable Valley High School and has spent most of the past decade living in New York City and includes among his credits stints with the Temptations and Benny Golson.  He currently performs with the Paul Anka Orchestra.

Collins is a 1995 graduate of Plattsburgh High School and has been living in New York City since 2000 where he has performed with many of the top musicians and groups on the New York music scene.  Among his credits are Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead and performances with trumpeter Ingrid Jensen.

Guitar Ensemble Concert

A Guitar Concert, featuring SUNY Plattsburgh Guitar Ensemble and private students of Michael Angelo Fratino, adjunct lecturer of music, will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Hyman and Frances Krinovitz Recital Hall in Hawkins Hall. Admission is free, however seating is limited, please arrive early.
