The 30th Annual SUNY Plattsburgh Jazz Festival March 31 - April 8
Plattsburgh, NY - The State University of New York College at Plattsburgh will host
its 30th annual Jazz Festival March 31 through April 8. The festival has been expanded
this year to include six events during a nine-day period and includes special guest
artists from the Latin jazz group, Jazzismo.
The festival kicks off on Friday, March 31, with a performance by the SUNY Plattsburgh Contemporary Combo under the direction of Dr. Rick Davies, associate professor of music. This free concert will be held at Giovanni's Trattoria, 15 Bridge Street, Plattsburgh, beginning at 9 p.m.
The SUNY Faculty Jazz Ensemble concert will be held on Wednesday, April 5, at 8 p.m., in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. This free concert features faculty members Dr. Rick Davies, Herm Matlock, Michael Fratino, Karen Becker, John Rivers and Gabriel Jarrett.
On Thursday, April 6, a special showing of the film, "The Buena Vista Social Club," will be held at 8 p.m. in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. This free event is co-sponsored by the Center for Diversity, Pluralism and Inclusion at SUNY Plattsburgh and will feature a post-film discussion.
The SUNY Plattsburgh Jazz Ensemble and Contemporary Combo will perform with special guest artists Jazzismo on Friday, April 7, at 8 p.m. in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. Jazzismo members include top jazz musicians from Vermont - Alex Stewart, tenor saxophone; Bruce Sklar, piano; John Rivers, bass; Jeff Salisbury, drums; and Steve Ferraris, congas. Tickets are $8 for general admission; $5 for seniors, faculty, staff and non-SUNY Plattsburgh students; and $2 for SUNY Plattsburgh students.
Members of Jazzismo will also present a workshop on Latin jazz Saturday, April 8, at 2 p.m. in the Myers Fine Arts Building, room 300. Anyone interested in learning more about performing Latin music should attend this free workshop and clinic. No previous experience is required, and high school students are especially encouraged to attend.
The Jazz Festival concludes with an all-night Latin dance party on Saturday, April 8, from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. at the Plattsburgh Elks Club, 56 Cumberland Ave., Plattsburgh. From 7 to 8 p.m., learn the ways of salsa dancing by Salsalina's Victoria with DJ Raul. Then show off your new moves beginning at 8 p.m. when Jazzismo and members of the SUNY Plattsburgh Jazz Ensemble perform live Latin jazz music. Tickets are $10 for general admission; $5 for seniors, faculty, staff and non-SUNY Plattsburgh students; and $2 for SUNY Plattsburgh students. A cash bar will be available.
