SUNY Plattsburgh Symphonic Band to Present Concert of Finnish and American Music
The SUNY Plattsburgh Symphonic Band will perform a concert of Finnish and American music 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15, in E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. The program, “Hands Across the Sea: A Finnish-American Musical Celebration,” is the result of research performed by the ensemble’s director, Daniel Gordon, while he was on sabbatical in Finland last year.
The concert will begin with American composer John Philip Sousa’s work, “Hands Across the Sea,” serving as a musical symbol of the trans-Atlantic nature of the program.
Music by Finnish composers will include Atso Almila’s “Visions from the North,” Pertti Pekkanen’s “The Joker,” and Jean Sibelius’s “Finlandia.” Also on the program will be several short concertos composed specifically for young performers. The pieces will feature solos on a variety of band instruments performed by music students from Plattsburgh City schools.
