Dr. Beth Dixon, Department of Philosophy, and SUNY Plattsburgh students, who are participating in the Philosophy in the Schools program, will discuss how the program works. They will address what teachers and educators do in their classrooms with the Pre-K through 12th grade curriculum of philosophy novels and teacher resource guides. They will also address how the program can be used to comply with New York State Learning Standards in English Language Arts and the requirements articulated by Project SAVE, with special attention to character education and what is happening now in their local pilot program - Philosophy in the Schools.

A staff scientist for the Lake Champlain Committee and author of a new book, titled “Lake Champlain: A Natural History,” Winslow will discuss issues ranging from environmental advocacy to the natural history of Lake Champlain.

Forum led by the director of the Oregon Writing Project, member of the Rethinking Schools editorial board and the author of such books as "Reading, Writing, and Rising Up: Teaching About Social Justice and the Power of the Written Word." She is also continuing her research into the issues of teaching and social justice.
