SUNY Plattsburgh Prepares for Opening Weekend


PLATTSBURGH, NY __ Plans for a packed opening weekend Aug. 20 - 22 at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh are moving into high gear including a performance by comedian Tim Young.

The weekend will kick off with the President's Welcome on Friday, Aug. 20 at 8:30 a.m. in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall.

SUNY Plattsburgh President John Ettling will speak to faculty and staff in his first campus-wide address. New members of the faculty, staff and administration will be introduced as well.

On Saturday, residence halls open for new and returning students at 8 a.m., and
students can report to their appropriate hall to register and receive room combinations. Members of various college fraternities and sororities will be available to assist students in moving their furnishings into their residence hall rooms.

The Bursar's Office as well as Financial Aid will be opened from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Kehoe Administration Building. The Admissions Office will be opened from noon to 4 p.m. Students may begin to use their meal cards at Clinton Dinning Hall at 4:30 p.m.

The annual Fall Convocation Ceremony will be held at 7 p.m. in the E. Glenn Glitz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. President Ettling will welcome freshmen and transfer students during the ceremony, which will be followed by the planting of the class tree in honor of the graduating class of 2008.

Dr. Elizabeth Bernat, assistant professor in the Department of Communication, will address students in "Living College as Emeril Lagasse (BAM!): Kickin' It Up a Notch!" at 8 p.m. in the Warren Ballrooms, Angell College Center, Her message will focus on the importance of students becoming active participants in campus activities.

At 9 p.m., comedian Tim Young will perform in the Warren Ballrooms. Most of Young's humor is based on his own experiences at college. Young has performed at over 200 colleges and was nominated for Comedian of the Year twice. He has been seen on MTV's "Apartment 2F", "The Jim Bruer Show," and "Daria," as well as several appearances on NBC's "Friday Night" and at the Montreal "Just For Laughs" Comedy Festival.

On Sunday, the Rock The Vote Tour Bus will visit SUNY Plattsburgh beginning at 11 a.m. Rock The Vote aims to educate and register young voters at colleges across the country. The bus will be located between the Angell College Center and Champlain Valley Hall throughout the afternoon.

Sororities and fraternities in conjunction with Sodexo Campus Services will host an all-campus barbeque in the Angell College Center Courtyard from 2 to 7 p.m.

The Fall Academic Schedule officially gets underway Monday, Aug. 23 with classes beginning at 8 a.m.
