SUNY Plattsburgh honors Shoah victims during annual Holocaust remembrance
A Yom Hashoa service at Temple Beth Israel opens the 16th annual SUNY Plattsburgh Week of Remembrance for Holocaust victims.
Students, faculty and staff are invited to a religious service for Yom Hashoa, or Holocaust Remembrance Day in honor of the 6 million Jews who perished at the hands of the Nazis during World War Il. The service will be held on Monday, April 20, at 7 p.m. at the temple on Bowman Avenue in Plattsburgh.
The commemoration continues Thursday with the annual memorial ceremony at 4 p.m. in the Holocaust Memorial Shrine, Feinberg Library. During this memorial, Dr. Jonathan Slater, associate professor in the Center for Communication and Journalism, will announce plans to institute a creative competition for students that centers on the theme of Holocaust and genocide. Rules and submission guidelines will be announced next semester. Prizes will be awarded.
Anna Gonshor of McGill University's Department of Jewish Studies will provide a view of Jewish life in Eastern Europe between the world wars at 7 p.m. Thursday in Room 206 of Yokum Hall.
In addition, Library and Information Services will host a virtual and in-library exhibit of media and materials related to the Holocaust. The in-library exhibit will be housed in Feinberg Library throughout the week.
