Summit to Explain, Discuss Local Impact of Cryptocurrency Mining in Region
SUNY Plattsburgh and the Adirondack North Country Association will co-host a summit on cryptocurrency Tuesday, June 5 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Yokum Lecture Hall.
The North Country’s low-cost power has become attractive to cryptocurrency mining operations in the region, which can in turn drive up local power prices as these businesses generate fortunes for their owners but create very few local jobs.
“Cryptocurrency: Impacts, Challenges and Opportunities for Our Regional Economy” will feature a primer on cryptocurrency, discussions on public policy implications for New York state and the region, including generating community benefit and managing uses of low-cost power, and implications on renewable power resources regionally, nationally and globally.
Registration is $25 and includes lunch and refreshments. To register, visit www.adirondack.org/events. For more information, call ANCA at 518-891-6200.
