SUNY Plattsburgh, in collaboration with Cornerstone and Keeseville pharmacies, will host a flu clinic for faculty, staff and students Thursday, Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Relaford Room across from the Educational Opportunity Program offices, Macomb Hall, on the university campus.

In an effort to stem the tide of flu-borne illness this season, the Student Health and Counseling Center is teaming up with the pharmacy chain to make it easier to be vaccinated. The Centers for Disease Control recommends that everyone, ages 6 months and older, get an annual flu shot.

In addition to vaccination, the health center recommends these precautions to avoid getting sick or spreading the flu to others if you do get sick:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use hand sanitizer, especially before and after caring for someone who is sick, after coughing or sneezing and using the bathroom
  • Cover coughs and sneezes with a clean tissue or use your elbow to cover
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick, especially if they have a fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headaches, chills or fatigue; if you can’t avoid close contact, try to maintain a six-foot distance
  • Avoid crowded places, especially indoors
  • Improve ventilation by opening windows and doors to increase air circulation
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that are often touched by others
  • Exercise regularly, which can reduce the risk of infection
  • Smoking can increase the risk of complications from the flu; for help in quitting, visit https://www.nysmokefree.com/
  • Eat nutritious food such as spinach and other green, leafy vegetables, citrus fruits, broccoli and green tea, all known to improve the immune system

Flu shots are covered by most insurances. For those who do not have insurance or who don’t want to bill insurance, there is an option to pay $30 cash.
