Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble Concert April 25
PLATTSBURGH, NY __ The Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble at the State University of New York
College at Plattsburgh will perform in concert on Thursday, April 25, at 7:30 p.m.
in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. This event is free and open to the
public.
The ensemble, under the direction of Elizabeth Gorevic, will present a varied program of music for string orchestra, including "Concerto No. 1 in A Minor" by J.S. Bach featuring guest violin soloist Vanessa Husaruk. Performing as a soloist with orchestras in Canada and the United States, Husaruk has been sponsored by many prestigious organizations in recitals in both countries as well.
The evening opens with a suite of English country dances by Henry Purcell. Following the Bach concerto, the ensemble will perform the "Concertino #2" by award-winning composer Samuel Adler, who has been commissioned to write compositions by such institutions as the National Endowment for the Arts, the Rockefeller Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
"Concertino #2" was published in 1978 and was premiered by the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. The piece uses many unusual string techniques as it moves from driving intensity to introspective moments to a humorous lopsided dance and ends with a fast and furious finale.
"The Holberg Suite" by Edvard Grieg brings the program to a close with lyrical beauty and the freshness of Scandinavian folk melodies and dances.
