Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble & Guest Cellist


PLATTSBURGH, NY (November 14, 2007) - The SUNY Plattsburgh Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble will present two concerts featuring guest cello soloist Mauricio Villazon.

  • The first concert starts at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28 in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium in Hawkins Hall on the SUNY Plattsburgh Campus. This event is free and open to the public.
  • The second concert starts at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29 in the Peru Central High School Auditorium. There is no admission charge; however, donations are welcome to support the Peru Central School Music Booster Club.


The Sinfonia Chamber Ensemble, a group of 16 student string players, will perform works by Nielsen, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin and Holst under the direction of SUNY Plattsburgh Adjunct Lecturer Elizabeth Gorevic.

Villazon will be featured as soloist for Tchaikovsky's "Andante Cantabile." The 21-year-old artist was born in Mexico and has established a name for himself and his work. His former teachers include Moonlight Tran and University of Nevada at Las Vegas Professor Andy Smith. He currently studies with Owen Carman at the Meadowmount Conservatory in Westport, NY. He has attended the conservatory for four summers and was an assistant teacher there last summer.

Villazon performed and taught at the Las Vegas Second Annual Cello Day Festival held at the Las Vegas Academy and has performed concerts as soloist and chamber music collaborator in Las Vegas and locally at the Meadowmount School, Au Sable Club, the Crater Club and SUNY Plattsburgh. He won second place in the annual Bolognini Cello Competition in Las Vegas and has taught privately in Las Vegas. He recently competed in the Hudson Valley String Competition in Poughkeepsie, NY.
