Pendragon Theatre Performs "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter"
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. (September, 9, 2008) - The SUNY Plattsburgh theater department announces a one-night-only performance of "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter," by Pendragon Theatre on Tuesday, September 23, at 7:30 p.m. in Hartman Theatre, Myers Fine Arts. Tickets will be sold at the door only. Prices are $10 for general admission, $8 for seniors and students, and $2 for SUNY Plattsburgh faculty and staff.
Playwright Julie Marie Myatt decided to write "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter" after reading so many newspaper stories about veterans unable to reintegrate into society after arriving home. But Myatt wanted to write a different sort of play - one that did not conform to the stereotypes of war. She wanted to tell the story of someone who has experienced enormous trauma and finds the strength she needs through the compassion of other people.
A winner of the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Theatre, "Welcome Home, Jenny Sutter" premiered in February at The Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Upon her return from an exhausting tour of duty in Iraq, a wounded Jenny ends up in Slab City, a California desert community of displaced misfits. Her search for what she has lost, and what lies ahead, is filled with humor, compassion and hope. This play contains strong language and mature themes.
