Open Auditions For Spring Production of "South Pacific"

PLATTSBURGH, NY — Calling all inspiring actors in the North Country. Here's your opportunity to perform with a Broadway legend. The Music Department at the State University of New York College at Plattsburgh is joining forces with the Essex Theatre Company for a once-in-a-lifetime production of Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific .

George Hearn, an Emmy and two-time Tony Award winner, and his wife and Broadway performer, Leslie Hearn, will star together in this theatrical masterpiece. The show will be performed in concert with a full orchestra and expanded chorus in the E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall. Two performances are scheduled for March 22 and 23, 2007.

An informational meeting for those who are interested in auditioning for the staged production will be held Sunday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in the Hartman Theatre, Myers Fine Arts Building at SUNY Plattsburgh. Participants will learn about the auditioning process, the expectations and demands of the show and will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Two open auditions for 10 women and 10 men for leads and featured roles as well as one boy and one girl for featured roles and 30 to 40 voices for the chorus will be held on Thursday Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. in room 226, Myers Fine Arts Building, and Friday, Oct. 13, at 6 p.m. in room 324 of Myers.

Participants should come prepared with a monologue and to sing a song of your choice, preferably a song by Rodgers and Hammerstein. Individuals who want to be considered for the chorus only need to prepare a song. A copy of the music must be provided for the pianist in a binder. Auditions will be conducted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Callbacks will be held on Saturday, Oct. 14, at 6 p.m. in room 324, Myers Fine Arts Building. Performers called back will receive an e-mail by Saturday morning. Those who are called back will sing a song and read a scene from the show. Women will sing, "I'm Gonna Wash that Man Right Out of my Hair," and men will perform, "There is Nothin' Like a Dame" and "Younger Than Springtime." Scenes will be given at the callbacks.
