North Country Small Business Development Center Offers Training on Creating Messages That Stick


The North Country Small Business Development Center will present “PR Magic: How to Harness the Power of Awe and Create Messages that Stick” Thursday, June 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the SBDC, 194 U.S. Oval.

Presented by SUNY Plattsburgh Director for Public Relations and Publications Michelle Marasch Ouellette, this workshop will look at the sort of methods and messages that can ignite viral responses, helping businesses find social media success with cost-effective results. 

Topics covered will include social media research on viral messages, samples of successful campaigns, crafting messages to match the medium and thoughts on starting a movement.

Attendees will come away with a toolkit that includes a press release template, information on message mapping and some tips on increasing Facebook EdgeRank so more people will see more of posts.

Currently the director of public relations and publications at SUNY Plattsburgh, Ouellette will take on an assistant professorship in the college’s journalism and public relations department this fall. Her prior experience includes working as the director of community relations at Essex County ARC (now Mountain Lake Services) and serving as a teacher and service-learning coordinator. During her time at SUNY Plattsburgh, she has served as the college’s chief spokesman, public relations officer and alumni magazine and e-newsletter editor. She has also had oversight of the college’s main social media sites and has presented on social media, press release writing and more at conferences and in a webinar.

This free workshop is cosponsored by the North Country Small Business Development Center and KeyBank. Sign-in and networking will begin at 5 p.m., with the presentation starting promptly at 5:30 PM.
