New Eatery, New Options Debuts in ‘The Nest’ for Spring 2025 Semester in ACC

Students returning to SUNY Plattsburgh will find an all-new dining space in the Angell College Center where the Sundowner once occupied.

The Cardinal Nest, so voted on by students, opens with the start of the spring 2025 semester and is nothing like what they left when the Sundowner went offline after commencement 2024.

Catherine Keleher, executive director of CAS, said The Nest, as it’s come to be known, is more than a place to grab a bite to eat between classes.

nest seating areas“It’s a meeting space, a place where you can feel comfortable hanging out even if you’re not here to eat,” she said two weeks before the doors officially open to the public. Work crews were busy finishing installation of lights, electronic menus, the new glass front doors. “The motive behind the design is to not only break bread together but also to find community.”

A student survey to ascertain what students wanted for seating came back with a variety of suggestions, and Keleher said they tried to include them all.

“They wanted booths, regular tables, high tops, so we provided those,” she said. They will also have space where students can meet to do work, presentations and group projects complete with smart TV and conference-style tables.

Nest pergolaThe space is bright and open, with lots of natural light flooding in from the right-side wall of windows. A pergola stands illuminated with twinkle lights, the area underneath to be populated with comfortable seating. At the structure’s four posts are four kiosks where students and faculty/staff who don’t order via the Boost app can order onsite.

“Anyone ordering through the kiosks will place their order, which will populate behind the scene for Chartwells. Diners will then go over to the station to pick up their food,” Keleher said. “It will help things go faster.” Even with only four kiosks.

“Many of our students use Boost. And if there are lines at the kiosks, you can order on Boost while you’re standing here,” she said.

The return of a dining facility will ease much of the congestion placed on other venues students found in the fall, Keleher said. And in the ACC, students can find a good variety of choices at different times throughout the day.
