Cardinal Country Gets New Look | SUNY Plattsburgh

Cardinal Country got a new look on Friday, Aug. 18, with SUNY Plattsburgh’s Department of Intercollegiate Athletics unveiling a new visual identity for “Burghy” that will be seen across all teams and the campus as a whole beginning this fall.

“These updated marks create a consistent approach we can easily use across all of our branding channels – from uniforms and playing surfaces to social media,” said Director of Athletics Mike Howard. “We worked to preserve the historical aspects even as we added new set of tools that will serve us well in the years ahead.”

New SUNY Plattsburgh Cardinals P Logo

The new primary Cardinal head provides a defined, sleek look that speaks to the competitive excellence of Plattsburgh State Athletics. The clean, simplified lines will maintain the appearance in large and small sizes, with the overall ratio essentially a square and a unique treatment of crown feathers setting it apart.

“Burghy is an integral part of campus and means a great deal to each of us,” said President John Ettling. “This design, and the accompanying new suite of materials, honors our tradition and spreads our wings a bit. I like it.”

Additionally, a new “P” logo, with custom serifs that resemble bird feathers, and a tertiary logo that melds the primary cardinal head with the custom “P,” have been created.

A complete set of unique lettering and numbering is also part of the mix and will be used as the primary font for Cardinal Athletics, with the angles and lines of the primary mark serving as the stylistic blueprint.

The suite of materials is displayed online. Souvenir items, including shirts and mugs, are available for purchase from the College Store on campus and online.

The process of developing updated Athletics marks began in 2015. A core team including representatives from Athletics, Alumni Relations, Student Affairs and Marketing led the project. Student-athletes, coaches and staff were also brought in as the effort progressed.

Torch Creative, a Dallas, Texas-based design studio with a heavy focus on branding, logo design, illustration and typography, conceptualized and developed the marks in addition to the Burghy font.

Updated signage will be hung across campus over the coming months to promote the new graphic identity. As uniform cycles arrive, Plattsburgh State student-athletes will don the new logos.

Along with the visual marks, a new Burghy mascot will be unveiled on Sunday, Aug. 27, at 4:15 p.m. on the Memorial Hall Fields.
