Music Department presents ChoralFest 2008

PLATTSBURGH, NY (April 15, 2008) - The SUNY Plattsburgh music department celebrates ChoralFest 2008 directed by Jo Ellen Miano, associate professor of music.

As part of this celebration, on April 25, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. the Cardinal Singers and College Chorale will present a concert, "Goodnight Till It Be Morrow: Night, Light and Love in Song," in E. Glenn Giltz Auditorium, Hawkins Hall.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or at the Angell College Center desk on campus. Prices are $8 for general admission; $5 for seniors, students and SUNY Plattsburgh faculty and staff; and $2 SUNY Plattsburgh student.

The repertoire for this ChoralFest 2008 concert focuses on the themes of night, light and love, spanning over five centuries of a cappella and accompanied choral music. The Cardinal Singers and College Chorale will each perform, demonstrating a wide spectrum of choral styles that address the themes of the festival. Songs of "night" abound, including the 16th-century English madrigal by Thomas Vautor, "Sweet Suffolk Owl," and more contemporary classics, such as Rodgers/Hart's "Blue Moon" and De Rose's "Deep Purple." Continuing with the theme of night, the Cardinal Singers will perform "Sure on This Shining Night," the James Agee poem set by frequently-performed composer Morten Lauridsen. The College Chorale will also perform the light-hearted Lennon/McCartney "Blackbird."

Songs of love include two charming French chansons, "Belle qui tien ma vie" and "Mignonne," as well as current arrangements of two Lennon/McCartney songs, "And I Love Her" and "I Feel Fine," and two songs from Brahms' "Liebeslieder Waltzes," with four-hand piano accompaniment by Ah Young You and Yana Avedian. The two choirs will perform as a combined chorus for the Duke Ellington's "Come Sunday," with soloists Rebecca Pethes and Matthew Lawliss.

Other ChoralFest 2008 events include choral clinics for high school students, presented by Miano, on Friday, April 25. Also included is the annual "Getting Ready for Your NYSSMA Solo" workshop, held on Saturday, April 26, from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Both of these events are free but require pre-registration. Please contact Miano at 564-2472 for more information and to register.
