Men's Soccer Earns Automatic Berth to NCAA Tournament

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (Nov. 8, 2010) -- The NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Committee has announced the 60-team bracket for the 2010 championship, which begins on Thursday. SUNY Plattsburgh, an automatic qualifier from the State University of New York Athletic Conference, will square off against Amherst College at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Sandy MacAllaster Field on the campus of Saint Lawrence University. Ticket prices will be announced later.

The SLU Saints will host the first and second round of the NCAA Division III men’s soccer tournament this weekend. They will play SUNYIT prior to the Amherst-Plattsburgh matchup, starting at 11 a.m. The winners of Saturday’s games will play at 1 p.m. Sunday for the right to advance to the Sectionals.

Plattsburgh is 13-4-4 overall and SUNYAC champions for the first time since 2005--the Cardinals' 12th conference title in history. The team won three conference tournament games by virtue of penalty-kicks, including a 5-4 thriller over defending SUNYAC champion Brockport in the finals and 5-3 at host Oneonta in the semifinals last weekend. Plattsburgh is making its 10th NCAA appearance, including back-to-back seasons.

The Lord Jeffs from Amherst (11-2-3) are an at-large selection from the New England Small College Athletic Conference.

The Saints (16-2-2) are unbeaten in their last 16 games while the Wildcats (13-5-1) are North Eastern Athletic Conference champions for the first time ever.
