Levitin Receives National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship
PLATTSBURGH, NY __ Dr. Alexis Levitin, professor of English at Plattsburgh State University
of New York, has received a National Endowment for the Arts Translation Fellowship
to continue work on the poetry of Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen and Herberto Helder.
This award for $10,000 was one of 11 such NEA awards granted in the year 2003. This was Levitin's second NEA Translation Fellowship, the first having supported his work on the poetry of Eugenio de Andrade.
Levitin also participated in a translation residency Aug. 17 through Sept. 8 at the Banff International Literary Translation Center during the first year of this new program's existence. This newly established center marks the first time that there has been a translation center in North America.
Through writing and giving readings, Levitin had a very busy year during 2003. He gave readings all over the country as well as internationally, including Rutgers University, The University of Alberta, University of Florida, Auburn University and University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
He had numerous publications in 2003 including his 10th volume of Eugenio de Andrade
poems in the book, Forbidden Words: The Selected Poetry of Eugenio de Andrade
. This work was the culmination of nearly 25 years of collaboration between Levitin
and the author.
