King to be Honored at Celebration on SUNY Plattsburgh Campus Feb. 2

mlk commemorationThe SUNY Plattsburgh Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, in collaboration with the Clinton County MLK Committee will celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Sunday, Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m. in the Warren Ballrooms, Angell College Center.

“Communities in Action: Empowering the Dream” will include a welcome by Allison Heard, vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion, and Brett Carpenter, chair, Martin Luther King Commission, as well as select readings, poetry, comments by SUNY Plattsburgh President Alexander Enyedi and musical selections by the Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir. Keynote address will be given by Robin Caudell, staff writer with the Press-Republican.

Sunday’s commemoration marks the first time the event will be held in February, during Black History Month and after students have returned for the semester.

Enyedi praised the collaboration between the commission and Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and said it is fitting the event is being held on the university campus, appropriate for “reflection on the values Dr. King stood for: equity, justice and the power of collective action.”

Collaborating with the MLK Commission “moves the needle on Pillars Three and Four of the Plattsburgh Next Strategic Plan to enhance equity and to deepen our relationship with our North Country neighbors,” said Allison Heard, vice president for diversity, equity and inclusion.

The university setting also creates “opportunities for students and community members to connect, learn and be inspired by (King’s) enduring message,” Enyedi said.
