Kent, Jackson State Memorial Ceremony Slated for May 5
The SUNY Plattsburgh Student Association will host the 46th annual memorial honoring Kent and Jackson State students killed during protests in 1970 Thursday, May 5 beginning at 12:15 p.m. on the front lawn of Kehoe Administration Building.
The Kent State shootings took place at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, Monday, May 4, 1970 when National Guardsmen fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds at students who were protesting President Richard Nixon’s announcement of the campaign in Cambodia. Four students were killed; nine were wounded. Eleven days later, Jackson, Miss., city and state police opened fire on students at Jackson State College, killing two and wounding 12.
The Plattsburgh State Gospel Choir will perform during the event, which is free and open to the public.
