Homecoming 2014 Offers Weekend of Tradition, Activity and Fun
SUNY Plattsburgh invites you to a weekend packed with Cardinal pride, tradition and fun during Homecoming 2014, Oct. 17-19.
Homecoming’s signature event, the Cardinal Athletic Hall of Fame induction, will take place Friday, Oct. 17 at 6 p.m. in the Warren Ballrooms, Angell College Center, where the college will honor Corey Davidson ’01, Keri Duffy ’97, Kelly Duffy-Coryer ’01, and Jim Mihalko ’66. Tickets are available in advance for $20.
“Having the Hall of Fame induction is fitting because the inductees are former athletes and alumni of the college” said Kerry Chapin-Lavigne, associate director of alumni relations. “And when most people think of the word ‘homecoming,’ the first thing that comes to mind is a sporting event, so we like to host our Hall of Fame ceremony during the weekend when we can show off our newest Hall of Famers.
"On Saturday, the annual tent party, held from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the soccer/lacrosse field at the Field House, is the perfect place to watch the Cardinal women’s soccer game beginning at 1 p.m. Enjoy a taste of the North Country with sweet and hot sausages with peppers and onions, michigan hot dogs, coleslaw, cookies, water, chips and a beverage, all included with advance registration. Attendees will also receive a red Homecoming 2014 t-shirt to wear while cheering on the team. Tickets are available in advance for $15. Hall of Fame inductees will be recognized during halftime.
A popular homecoming tradition, the tug-o-war competition, will be Saturday at noon. Typically held over Hawkins Pond, this year’s competition will take place at Memorial Field because of repairs and renovations to the pond, slated to be finished next summer.
“Our students really get involved with Homecoming — alumni love seeing current students and having a chance to talk to them,” Chapin-Lavigne said.
Clubs, athletic teams, fraternities and sororities comprise the tug-o-war teams. The reigning champions, Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, are looking for their third consecutive title.
“We're really excited about it; it's become kind of an ongoing topic of discussion among us and the fraternity’s alumni. The alumni are really proud of it — it gives them another thing to look forward to when they come here that weekend,” said Adam Zakrzewski, president of Sigma Tau Gamma.
Beyond the traditional events, this year’s schedule will feature a few new offerings. Join the Greater Adirondack Ghost Tour Company for the Spirits of SUNY Plattsburgh beginning at 5 p.m. Friday and again at 7 p.m. Saturday. The walking tour will feature various campus sites with guides telling tales and spinning yarns. Guests may register online and are encouraged to wear comfortable footwear and bring cameras.
A craft beer tasting, a fan favorite from Reunion 2014, will be hosted at the Plattsburgh Brewing Company Saturday at 5 p.m. The brewery is located in the Comfort Inn on Route 3. Registration, available online for $10, includes beer samples and a complimentary Plattsburgh mug.
Close out the weekend Sunday morning at 10 with the 5K Cardinal Fun Run and Kids Mile, hosted by the cross country and track and field teams. The first 50 participants to register will receive a t-shirt.
