Holocaust Commemoration to Feature Inaugural Skopp Award
SUNY Plattsburgh will host the annual Holocaust commemoration, Days of Remembrance, with special guest speaker Dr. Richard Schaefer, assistant professor of history, Thursday, April 28, beginning at 5 p.m. in Krinovitz Recital Hall, Hawkins Hall.
In addition to Schaefer’s address, “Morality and Memory,” Dr. Vincent Carey will award the inaugural Douglas R. Skopp Prize, given to a student (or students) for original works commemorating the Holocaust. Winners will be announced just prior to the Days of Remembrance commemoration.
Skopp, professor emeritus of history and college historian, will be on hand immediately after the ceremony to sign copies of his new Holocaust novel, “Shadows Walking,” about a German nationalist physician who joins the Nazi Party and willingly participates in crimes against humanity.
Participants in the commemoration are also invited to visit the permanent installation of work by Dr. Herbert Savel, “Kaddish in Wood,” and SUNY Plattsburgh’s special Days of Remembrance exhibit, both in Feinberg Library on the college campus.
