Historic Season Yields Awards for Men's Basketball


SUNY Plattsburgh's men's basketball team has reeled in awards in the wake of a strong season and a run to the top 16 in the NCAA Division III tournament.

Junior forward Jonathan Patron of Huntington, N.Y., was named D3hoops.com 2017-2018 All-East Region Team Player of the Year, was the National Association of Basketball Coaches Player of the Year for the East Region, and was named to its First Team All-Region. He was also named the SUNYAC player of the year and was tabbed to the first team after leading the conference in both points per game (22.8) and rebounds per game (10.1). 

Patron was also SUNYAC player of the week four times and named to the D3hoops.com team of the week once. He picked up many career milestones along the way this season, including hitting 1,000 points in January. He was named the SUNYAC tournament's Most Valuable Player after scoring a career high 41 points in the championship game and 35 points in the semifinal game.

Head Coach Tom Curle was named Coach of the Year by D3hoops.com as part of its 2017-2018 All-East Region Team. He has also been named National Association of Basketball Coaches Coach of the Year for the east region and the SUNYAC Coach of the Year.

Under Curle’s guidance, the Cardinals went 25-5 overall, appeared in their 10th NCAA Division III tournament and set a new program record of 21 consecutive wins. Curle has been the all-time winningest Cardinals’ coach in both wins and winning percentage, which continues to increase after the success of the 2017-2018 season.

In addition to nods for Patron and Curle, senior guard Eli Bryant of Staten Island, N.Y., was named to D3hoops.com's second team. Bryant was also named NABC second team All-East Region and also hit the 1,000-point career milestone this season. He averaged 15.8 points per game, 3.4 assists per game, had 39 steals and shot 84.7 percent in free throws in the 28 games he played.
